Tide Pool Observation & Snorkeling in Izu

It was our first snorkeling experience, but we had a great time without any worries. During the initial rocky shore observation, we learned a lot from directly interacting with creatures, feeling their weight, texture, observing their colors, patterns, and even learning how to distinguish males from females. While snorkeling, seeing fish up close that we had only seen in an aquarium before made both parents and children feel like kids again, and we couldn’t help but raise our voices in excitement. The children also had a lot to say about the size and patterns of the fish they spotted, making it a very enjoyable memory. Thank you very much.

It was my daughter’s first snorkeling experience. Before she got used to breathing through her mouth, she accidentally got seawater in her nose and was a little scared, but the captain took my daughter’s hand and gently guided her, which quickly dispelled her fear. It was my first time snorkeling. I participated with my two children and my mother in the quiet sea of Aogahama. Until now, we had enjoyed playing in the rocky shore at places like Inatori, but snorkeling, floating and looking at the sea, was a first for us. We stayed at a vacation resort and participated because we could snorkel just a 9-minute walk from the hotel. It was our first time at Aogahama, but it wasn’t too crowded and was a hidden gem. Snorkeling with two elementary school children, we were delighted to see sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and damselfish living in the sea. Seeing marine life in real life, rather than in books or aquariums, is much more exciting. I’ve always loved the sea, but I thought it was scary, so I couldn’t muster the courage to play without asking local people first. This time, I really wanted to snorkel, so I asked the recommended eco-surfer from our accommodation. Thanks to the captain, we were able to play in the sea safely and enjoyably. We encountered sea cucumbers, pufferfish, turban shells, sea urchins, spiny lobsters, and various beautiful fish (such as blue fish, slender fish, striped fish, and fish with tiger patterns) that I forgot the names of. It was a very beautiful sea (even though the visibility was only about 60%!), but I heard that it is gradually becoming polluted. We had fun playing, but we also learned about the importance of nature, the nutrients flowing from the mountains, and things we wouldn’t notice in the city. We had the opportunity to think about coexistence between humans and nature, and I’m really glad we came. Anyway, I highly recommend it!

We were taken care of on the last day of our 2-night, 3-day trip to Minami Izu. We used it for my third-grade son’s first snorkeling experience. The captain’s skillful guidance made it possible for my son, who is not good with creatures, to touch many of them. The lecture on dangerous creatures was also polite, and it was a safe and secure experience. We discovered many fish, including sea bream, pufferfish, spiny lobsters, moray eels, and nudibranchs. It was fun to see box puffers puffed up and beautiful blue fish. My daughter didn’t like sea cucumbers at first and didn’t want to put her feet in the water, but she got used to it quickly and had fun catching crabs on the way back. This was our third snorkeling experience. Beautiful sea, surprisingly many fish. It was fun and amazing!! The captain knows the terrain and the creatures very well, so I feel very relieved. We had a wonderful experience as a family of four. We participated in the first rock pooling with my husband, me, and our two sons. We encountered crabs, sea cucumbers, purple sea urchins, and our two sons were already excited. My first-grade son had almost no experience snorkeling, but we received very polite responses, including how to put on the equipment. In the sea, there were beautiful fish everywhere, and we were surprised to be able to observe moray eels and spiny lobsters, among others, and were amazed by their richness. It’s been five years since I’ve been to Japan, and it’s my first time snorkeling. The whole family was looking forward to it. The captain was very kind and taught us carefully. Even though I can’t swim, I was moved by seeing so many fish. I’ve come to like Aogahama. I’d like to come again with the whole family.

If we were going to the sea with friends from nursery school, it would be, “I want to try snorkeling!” and “I want to see the world of the Little Mermaid!”, so we applied. The telephone response was also good because we were able to ask about children’s worries in advance and prepare mentally. I was worried about places where I couldn’t touch the bottom, but there was the fun of finding fish while floating, so I could participate with peace of mind.

During rock pooling, the captain quickly caught various creatures, explained them in an easy-to-understand manner, and linked them to our daily lives. It was also a good memory to find a slightly large crab and have the whole family participate in the capture operation (laughs). Also, honestly, I was worried if my daughter would enjoy snorkeling because she is not used to the water. However, after preparing for water adaptation with the captain, she was able to enjoy snorkeling in no time… I can entrust everything to the captain with peace of mind. After that, we observed the underwater world by the captain’s side, met various fish and creatures, and had an impressive experience. The natural environment of Yumigahama and Aogahama is truly amazing. Surfing, rock pooling, snorkeling, everything was very satisfying. The captain occasionally talked about daily experiences of coexisting with nature, and the children were full of curiosity and bombarded him with questions. In various experiences, the captain quickly removed any anxieties and guided us happily, so both parents and children were able to enjoy themselves to the fullest. “The captain is so cool!” is the children’s favorite phrase. My husband is in awe, saying, “The captain is like the legendary figure of Yumigahama, or even greater, what style of swordsmanship is this?!” (laughs). My son has written several pages of diary entries for these three days. My daughter said, “The captain is kind,” and in her picture diary, there were drawings of her enjoying snorkeling with the captain. I think the impact of these three days of experience on the children is very significant. I am grateful to have spent the beginning of summer with the captain.
